On 6th August we are delighted to announce an afternoon of free walking tours of the Spitalfields public art programme with an opportunity to meet some of the artists’ showing their work.
The walking tours will take place at 12 noon, 1.30 pm and 3.00 pm each commencing under the canopy on Bishops Square.
Tours will last approximately 30 minutes. Attendance is free and open to all but spaces are limited so please register your interest by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
Highlights are a permanent commission by Kenny Hunter and a group of sculptures by Michelangelo Arteaga, Gabriel Birch and David Teager-Portman, all recent graduates of London art schools, currently on display in and around Bishop’s Square. These works encompass figurative and abstract sculpture and installation in a surprising variety of materials, each responding in different ways to the rich, layered history and atmosphere of Spitalfields.
The tours will be led by one of the programme’s curators, Emma Russell, and will start with a background to the revolving exhibition programme running since 2007 with comment on the current works and then an introduction to the artists, who will discuss their own work, the fabrication, materials and the practicalities of showing in a public space, as well as talking about their practice generally. There will be the opportunity to ask questions.
The public art programme at Bishop’s Square provides a unique opportunity to see sculpture up close in the public realm, set against the vibrant and ever changing urban backdrop of Spitalfields.
